New build work increased in May
Construction output slipped 0.6% in May largely because of a fall in repair and maintenance work.
Official figures from the ONS said repair and maintenance work was down 2.1% in the month. But new build work was up 0.6%.
The figures said total construction output over the three month period to May was up 1.2%. New build was up 0.9% while repair and maintenance rose 1.5%.
Scott Motley, head of programme, project and cost management at Aecom, said: “A dip in output, particularly after a positive couple of months, will come as a disappointment for many contractors. However, there is hope that recent government commitments and the warmer weather will support steady growth in the coming months.”
