Consultant wins contract to project manage Race Cottam designed eco-school scheme in Derby

Consultant EC Harris has won the contract to project manage the construction of one of the most environmentally-friendly schools in Derby.

Designed by architect Race Cottam Associates, the £20.5m scheme will replace the Sinfin Community School which was largely destroyed by fire 14 months ago.

Deputy headmaster Howard Jones said: “The major driving force behind the design solution has developed from the educational aspirations; to create imaginative internal spaces, learning environments and correct relationships between different elements in the school.”

The design features separate hubs, accommodating key subject areas and reflecting a new ‘house’ type structure.

Sustainable features include a bio-mass boiler using woodchip fuel sourced locally, a wind turbine and grey water recycling.

EC Harris was appointed by Derby City Council and funding has been secured through the government’s ΢Ȧ Schools for the Future Pathfinder programme.

Work is due to start on site in June with the new school scheduled to re-open in September 2008
