The Magna Centre, the £46m science adventure centre created inside a former steelworks in Rotherham, has won Britain's most prestigious building award, the RIBA's Stirling Prize. The popular lottery-funded project, designed by Wilkinson Eyre, beat the even more popular Eden Centre in Cornwall, designed by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, to win the £20,000 prize. Wilkinson Eyre's design approach was praised by the RIBA judges for concentrating new exhibition areas in four self-contained pods within the cavernous space of the steelworks, allowing the existing building to speak for itself.
