A brand-new public library opened in Queens, New York, last week, adding a new landmark to the city. Designed by local architect Steven Holl Architects, the $40m Hunters Point Library – which took 10 years to build – sits in a prime position on the bank of the East River, directly across from the UN headquarters. The six-storey aluminium-painted concrete building, whose simple cuboid form features dramatic cut-outs, houses 50,000 books.
